Preface
‘Ecoworld’ (A Textbook of Environmental Studies) is a series of 5 books for primary
classes, written in conformity with the guidelines of National Education Policy
(NEP) formulated by the NCERT under the supervision of Ministry of Human
Resource Development (HRD). The basic aim of NEP to make education universally
accessible from primary to secondary is kept in mind while conceiving this series
on EVS. The subject matter of the books will enable teachers to monitor students'
progress in a non-threatening, supportive environment.
Innovatively designed, the series focuses on helping young learners explore and
learn about their immediate surroundings and the world around them. It
encourages them to develop a clear understanding of the relationship among the
natural, cultural and social environments.
This series is well-graded, and particular care has been taken to make the books
both child-friendly and teacher-friendly. Special emphasis is laid on making the
text simple and level specific.
This series follows a shift from totally content based learning to process based
outcome oriented learning. The special features of the series are :
• It is based on the latest NCERT guidelines and recommendations, as suggested
under the NEP.
• The book has topics relevant to child's immediate environment in the
beginning which gradually shift to a wider environment.
• The examples are derived from child's everyday life.
• The concepts have been selected with utmost care so that the child can easily
understand them.
• The use of vocabulary has been carefully controlled.
• The books are profusely illustrated with colourful pictures to make learning
interesting and easy.
• Activities recommended are easy to do and aim at arousing child's
imagination.
• Exercises based on textual matter have been devised according to the age and
readiness.
• The Note for the Teacher has been given to enlighten the teacher about how to
get an activity done from the children and how to relate the activity to things,
ideas or people in their surroundings.
It is sincerely hoped that with the active cooperation of the teacher community,
the series would be able to serve the purpose for which it is written. All
suggestions for improving the contents of the books will be gratefully accepted.
