air. The layer of air that is found around the Earth is called the atmosphere. A
model of the Earth is called a globe.
Surface of Land
The surface of the Earth has two parts : the land and the water. About two-third
of the Earth is covered with water and one-third part is land. The Earth is
surrounded by the air. The air has oxygen which we breathe in. It covers the Earth
like a blanket. This is what we call atmosphere.
Land, water and air are necessary for life on the Earth. The surface of the land is
not the same everywhere. It is low at some places and high at other places.
Plains : Plains are flat low level land. Most people
live and grow crops on the plains.
Hills : Hills are the land which are very high. Hills
have usually cold climate. When it is very hot in
plains during summer, we go to the hills to get relief
from heat. Hill
Mountains : Mountains are very high hills. The upper
parts of the mountains are covered with snow. In
summer, the snow melts and forms rivers. Mount
Everest is the highest mountain peak in the world.

Plateau : Plateaus are flat areas at a height. They
are formed from broken old mountains.
Desert : Parts of the Earth covered with sand and
having almost no vegetation, are called deserts.
