Spyware can consume a lot of memory, making the computer very slow and difficult to work
with. The biggest problem with spyware is that it can steal your information and misuse your
computer.
ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
Antivirus software refers to applications designed to detect and remove viruses from computer
systems. However, certain types of viruses are difficult to remove and files damaged by them may
be lost forever. Whenever the computer system starts up, the antivirus software starts
automatically and keeps a check on every file that is opened or run and on all Internet traffic. If
the software detects a virus, it tries to remove the virus.
The following is necessary for an antivirus program to be effective:
• It should run in the background at all times.
• It should be kept updated so that it can recognise new versions of malicious programs.
• It should have the capability to scan e-mail attachments and files as they are downloaded
from the Internet.
• The user should run full disk scans periodically. This checks all files on a computer system.
You must install antivirus software in your computer system. Whenever you try to copy or access
an infected file, the antivirus software shows a warning message, and thus tries to prevent you
from accessing the infected file or program.
There are new viruses being created every day. Hence, it is necessary to update the antivirus
regularly so that it can handle these threats. Some of the popular antivirus programs are:
PROTECTING THE COMPUTER
These days, computers are widely used for accessing the Internet. You make use of CDs, DVDs
and pen drives to share documents, files, pictures, etc. These are used for communicating,
exchanging messages and sending attachments, among many other functions.
You must follow these precautions to stay secure and protect important data:
• Use original operating system.
• Use an antivirus software.
• Do not install pirated software.
• Always scan the pen drive before copying files.
