something heavy on top of a

rolling log!

People tried using more than one

log and rolling the logs along

together. It was hard, slow work,

but heavy weights could be
moved in this way.

Perhaps, one day, someone cut the end from a log and made the first wheel!

Something to Do

Try moving a small empty box in this
way. Put one pencil in front of it and
push it on to the pencil. Put another
pencil behind the first one under the
box. Use a few more pencils to carry the

weight. Just keep picking up the
leftover pencil and placing it in front of
the box as you push it along. Was it
easier than picking the box up and
moving it?

Ways to Travel

After the wheel was invented, our lives became much

easier. But the greatest change happened in the way
we went from one place to another. Long ago,

humans or animals pulled carts to carry goods or to

travel. Now we have much faster means of transport.

Now we see different modes of land, water, and air transport. Our choice of

transport depends on where we have to go and how much money we are ready

to spend.
