river levels had exceeded the danger level at the Delhi Railway Bridge, bea ng the

previous high set 45 years ago in 1978. Several factors contributed to flooding in Delhi,
including an overcrowded drainage system that struggles to cope with a rapid influx of
water, and leading to flooding in low-lying areas. Another factor is rapid urbanisa on,

especially in New Delhi, which has led to an increase in paved surfaces and, in turn
increased runoff. With rapid urbanisa on comes illegal encroachments and obstruc ons
on riverbanks and drainage channels which hinder the smooth flow of water.
