Some rainwater seeps into the ground. This is called ground water.
To see how this happens, you could pour a
glass of water on the soil. You will see the
water spreads and disappears. It goes
underground! We dig wells to get
groundwater. It can also be brought out
with the help of hand pumps. Well Hand pump
In some places, water gushes out from under the
ground. These are called springs. In some places,
there are hot springs.
Spring Potable Water
Very often, different things are mixed in water. Water also has tiny germs that
can make us sick. Such water is unfit for drinking. Water that is safe for drinking is
called potable water.
Potable water is colourless, and has no smell or germs.
Making Water Fit for Drinking
We must boil and filter water to make it fit for drinking. Drinking water should be
stored in a clean vessel with a lid.
Look at the pictures. You can see the ways in which water becomes dirty.
