Small living creatures called microorganisms live in soil, but they are so tiny
that we cannot see them without the help of a microscope. When soil is
mixed with water, these tiny moving organisms become visible under a
microscope. These microorganisms, also called microbes, include bacteria,
fungi, and tiny animals. They play important roles in nature. The word
"microorganism" means a very small living being, as "micro" means small
and "organism" means a living thing. Scientists use microscopes to see
these tiny creatures because our eyes alone cannot see them.
