allowing scientists to study vegetation patterns, microscopic ocean life, sea
surface temperatures, environmental hazards like oil spills, and even the
movement of wind across the globe.
Now, we’ll explore the unique conditions that make Earth capable of
supporting life, uncovering what sets our planet apart as a truly remarkable
and welcoming home in the known universe .
WHY IS EARTH A UNIQUE PLANET?
Why is the Earth so extraordinary? There are countless planets in the
universe, and the Earth is the only one known to support life in all its diverse
forms. But where do you think this life actually exists? All living things-
whether in mountains, forests, rivers, oceans, or cities– inhabit only a very
thin layer on the planet’s surface. From the highest mountain peak to the
deepest ocean trench, life is confined to the Earth’s outermost layer, known
as the crust . Compared to the entire size of the planet, this layer is
incredibly thin. Imagine Earth as an apple— the crust would be as thin as
the apple’s skin. This delicate surface layer is what makes Earth truly
remarkable-it supports all life.

Activity-1 Aim: To find out what makes Earth so special.
Procedure: Make a list of some fascina ng features of Earth that we o en overlook

but are actually quite important. Record them in the Table below. A few examples
have been provided to get you started.
Table : Interes ng Features of the Earth
S. No. Interes ng Features of the Earth
1. The air we breathe stays on Earth and doesn't escape into space.
(Remember, gases move freely and don't have a fixed volume)
2. We stay firmly on the ground due to gravity (Chapter 5), yet our
heart is s ll able to pump blood upward to our head.
