These areas play a very important role in saving nature, studying wildlife,
                                     and preserving India's natural heritage.

                                     Human-Made Ecosystems

Humans have always depended on nature for food, water, air, and shelter.
Over time, we have created our own versions of ecosystems to meet our

specific needs. These are called human-made or artificial ecosystems.
                                     Examples of Human-Made Ecosystems:

                                     • Fish ponds for fish farming

                                     • Farms and crop fields for growing food
                                     • Parks and gardens for recreation and greenery
                                                                                                           Fish pond
When designed thoughtfully, these artificial ecosystems can:
                 Science • Help reduce pollution
                     Bytes
                                     • Support a variety of plant and animal life (biodiversity)
                           Testimony
Protected areas are not • Provide green spaces for people to relax and play
                just for animals and
plants. They also teach us However, unlike natural ecosystems, human-made ones need regular care
about nature, help and maintenance. They rely on people to provide water, remove waste, and
scien sts with research, protect plants and animals from disease or pests.
               and support a healthy
planet! Can you name any artificial ecosystem in your area, like a public garden,
                                     park, or fish farm?

How Do Healthy Ecosystems Help Our Farms?

Farming is one of the most important livelihoods in India, supporting

Science millions of families. However, as the population grew, the pressure to
                     Bytes
                                     produce more food also increased.
Testimony During the 1950s and 60s, India faced a serious food shortage. To solve this,
Why do human-made scientists and farmers introduced modern farming methods that used:
              ecosystems need more
care and maintenance • Tractors and machines
             than natural ecosystems?
Can you suggest two ways • Chemical fertilisers
we can make them more • Pesticides to kill pests
                   sustainable?
This period of rapid growth in food production is called the Green
                                     Revolution.

While the Green Revolution helped India
become more food secure, the overuse of
                                     synthetic chemicals and machines has
                                     caused many problems over time.
